First Gynecological Visit

A first gynecological visit is an important step in understanding your reproductive health, and it doesn’t need to feel intimidating. At About Women By Women, your first visit focuses on learning about your menstrual cycle, answering questions, and helping you understand your reproductive health.
Our all-female OB/GYN team offers clear guidance and judgment-free care for teens and young women across Wellesley, Natick, Millis, and Walpole, MA.
What Is a First Gynecological Visit
A first GYN visit is simply an opportunity to talk with a women’s health specialist, ask questions, and learn what’s normal for your body. Most first visits do not involve a pelvic exam. Instead, we focus on:
Getting to know your health and period history
Understanding any symptoms you’re experiencing
Offering guidance about cycles, cramps, and body changes
Talking about birth control or sexual health, if needed
Usually, the first gynecological visits happen sometime in the teen years, often around 18–21. However, there’s no “perfect” age for scheduling the first gynecological visit.
You can schedule a visit at any time if you need guidance about your menstrual health, puberty-related changes, or understanding your reproductive health.
What Happens During a First GYN Visit
The first gynecological visit at About Women By Women is centered entirely around your comfort. The goal is to build trust, answer your questions, and help you understand your health, rather than rushing into exams or procedures.
A Comfortable, Informational Conversation
We begin by simply talking.
Our About Women By Women provider will ask about your period patterns, symptoms, personal concerns, and any questions you haven’t felt comfortable asking elsewhere. You can ask us about cramps, discharge, mood changes, birth control, puberty changes, or any issues you are facing.
General Physical Exam
A general exam is offered only if it’s relevant to your concerns. This may include checking your:
- Height and weight
- Blood pressure
- Any physical symptoms (abdominal pain, breast tenderness)
Nothing is done without explanation, and you’re always welcome to decline parts of the exam unless they’re medically necessary.
Education & Guidance
Your first GYN appointment is also about helping you understand your own body. Our provider will walk you through how cycles work, what’s normal during puberty and adolescence, and how symptoms can change over time.
Understanding Your Menstrual Cycle & Symptoms
If you have heavy periods, irregular bleeding, severe cramps, migraines around your cycle, or PMS symptoms, we help you understand why they’re happening and what can help. We take these symptoms seriously; they are never brushed off as “just part of being a teenager.”
Birth Control Guidance (If You Need It)
If you’re interested in contraception, we offer clear, judgment-free guidance. We help you understand:
- How different birth control methods work
- Their safety and effectiveness
- Which options fit your lifestyle and comfort level
Sexual Health Support (If Relevant)
If you are sexually active or thinking about becoming sexually active, we offer confidential guidance about consent, healthy relationships, STI testing, and safer-sex practices. Every conversation is shame-free and tailored to your comfort level.
Our goal is simply to make sure you have the guidance needed to stay informed, safe, and emotionally supported.
If you’re ready to schedule a first visit, call (781) 263-0033 or book online at any of our locations.
Pelvic Exam (Only When Necessary)
For most teens, a first gynecological visit does not include a pelvic exam. It’s only recommended when there is a specific medical reason, such as:
- Significant pelvic pain
- Unusual discharge
- Possible infection
- Symptoms that need closer evaluation
Even in those cases, the decision is made together, with your full understanding and comfort at the center of the conversation.
If a pelvic exam is needed, we take great care to make the experience as safe and gentle as possible. Our provider explains every step before it happens, checks in often, and moves slowly, giving time to ask questions or pause at any point. Consent is always required, and you stay in control of the pace throughout the exam.
