Fibroids & Endometriosis

Fibroids and endometriosis are common causes of pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, and fertility challenges, yet many women go years before receiving a diagnosis. Since the symptoms of both conditions often overlap, careful evaluation is essential to understand what’s truly causing your discomfort.
At About Women By Women, we offer comprehensive assessment, medical management, and minimally invasive surgical options when needed. We also offer same-week visits for urgent symptoms so you receive timely, compassionate care when you need it most.
What Are Fibroids?

Fibroids are noncancerous growths in the muscle of the uterus. Fibroids can vary in size and number and typically grow during reproductive years and shrink after menopause due to hormonal changes.
Many women have fibroids without symptoms. However, when they do experience fibroid symptoms, it may include:
- Heavy or prolonged bleeding
- Pelvic pain or pressure
- Bloating
- Pain during sex
- Fertility concerns

How We Diagnose Fibroids
Our diagnosis process begins with an unhurried and detailed conversation about your symptoms, cycle changes, and health goals. When needed, our team may perform an on-site pelvic ultrasound during your visit to give you immediate clarity.
Our all-female team takes time to understand your period patterns, pelvic pain, fertility plans, and how your symptoms affect your daily life. This careful review helps guide whether medication, monitoring, or a procedure is the right next step.
We perform on-site ultrasound in our Wellesley clinic to assess the size, number, and location of fibroids.
Depending on your symptoms, we may check for anemia, review hormone levels, or perform pregnancy testing. These tests help clarify the cause of your symptoms and ensure your treatment plan is safe and well-informed.
What Is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, often on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, pelvic walls, or bowels. Since this tissue responds to hormones with each menstrual cycle, it can lead to ongoing inflammation and pain.
Common symptoms of endometriosis include:

Endometriosis can affect women of any reproductive age, but symptoms often begin in the teens or early adulthood.
How We Diagnose Endometriosis
Our team takes a comprehensive, patient-centered approach to diagnosing endometriosis, combining a detailed conversation about your symptoms with imaging and, when needed, minimally invasive procedures.
Our provider discusses your pain patterns, cycle timing, bowel and bladder symptoms, and the duration of your discomfort. This helps determine the likelihood of endometriosis and whether further testing would be helpful.
While ultrasound cannot diagnose endometriosis itself, it can identify ovarian cysts (endometriomas) and rule out other causes of pelvic pain. We perform ultrasounds on-site in our Wellesley clinic, allowing your evaluation to begin promptly without the need for a separate appointment elsewhere.
If symptoms persist or imaging raises concerns, we may recommend diagnostic laparoscopy. This minimally invasive procedure allows for a definitive diagnosis and often treatment at the same time.
What to Expect at Your Initial Visit
Your first visit typically lasts about 20 to 30 minutes, giving our provider sufficient time to understand what you’re experiencing and answer your questions without rushing. If you need an ultrasound or lab work, many tests can be done in-house, so you don’t have to make an extra visit.
If a pelvic exam is needed, we perform it with a gentle, trauma-informed approach. We explain each step beforehand, check in with you throughout, and move at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
Once your imaging or testing is complete, our provider reviews the results in clear, easy-to-follow language. Our multilingual team ensures you can discuss your care in the language you’re most comfortable with.
We discuss the medical and surgical options that are most suitable for your situation and develop a care plan that supports your comfort, goals, and long-term health.
Treatment Options: Managing Fibroids & Endometriosis
Managing fibroids or endometriosis can feel overwhelming, and we make sure you feel supported at every step of your care. If you are experiencing severe pain or heavy bleeding, we offer same-week availability to get you the care you need sooner.
Our team considers your symptoms, age, fertility goals, and life stage before recommending a treatment plan that supports both immediate relief and long-term health. We walk you through each of your treatment options so you feel informed and in control of your care.
Medical Management
Many women may find meaningful relief with medication-based care, especially when symptoms are mild to moderate or when fertility preservation is a priority.
Options may include:
Hormonal birth control to regulate cycles and reduce heavy or painful periods
Medications that lighten periods or temporarily reduce fibroids or endometriosis activity
Anemia management when heavy bleeding has lowered iron levels
Pain management strategies for cramps, chronic pelvic pain, or inflammation
Minimally Invasive Procedures & Surgery
We offer minimally invasive procedures when symptoms are severe, persistent, or do not improve with medication. Your surgical consultation and follow-up are coordinated by the same OB/GYN provider who knows your medical history, ensuring comfort and continuity throughout your care.
Here are the treatment options we offer.
Removes fibroids while keeping the uterus intact, often chosen by patients who wish to preserve fertility.
A small camera is inserted through the cervix to remove fibroids or polyps inside the uterine cavity.
A minimally invasive surgery using small incisions to remove endometriosis implants and restore pelvic comfort.
Removal of ovarian cysts caused by endometriosis to ease pain and protect ovarian health.
Surgical removal of the uterus to treat severe fibroids or endometriosis when other treatments have not provided relief.
